How to redact a PDF

Hide account numbers, addresses, or names so nobody can copy, search, or uncover them.

  • About 2 minutes
  • Free, nothing uploaded
  • 6 steps

Steps

  1. Add your PDF

Drag your PDF onto the box, or click Choose a file. It opens right in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Draw boxes over private details

Draw boxes is on when the page opens. Drag across anything private to cover it in black.

  3. Redact whole pages if needed

Click Redact whole page to black out the page you're on. Use the thumbnails to move between pages.

  4. Fix mistakes

Select a box and press Delete to remove it, or drag its corner to resize it.

  5. Click Redact and save

Redacted pages are rebuilt as images, so the hidden text is removed for real. Document details are cleared too.

  6. Download the result

Click Download to save the redacted PDF. The original file is left exactly as it was.

Tips

  • Check the result by trying to select or search the hidden words. They won't be there.
  • Redacted pages become images, so text on them can't be selected afterwards. Pages without boxes keep their text.

Questions

Is a black box the same as redaction?
No. A black box drawn in most editors leaves the text underneath. Okaysize turns redacted pages into images, so the covered text is gone from the file.
Can I undo a redaction after saving?
Not in the saved file, which is the point. Your original PDF is still on your device if you need to start again.
