Report an outdated limitWhy files fail on Discord
Phones record at high bitrates, so a single minute of video is often 100 MB or more, far over the 20 MB free limit. Since August 2026, Discord also checks the size before its own compression on mobile, so a file that's too big is simply rejected.
What this preset does
This preset works out the exact bitrate that lands under your plan's limit for your video's length, keeps the audio clear, and checks the finished file. If it would still be over, it runs again a little lower, so the download always fits.
Questions
- What is Discord's file size limit in 2026?
- 20 MB per file for free accounts, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and 1 GB with Nitro. Servers boosted to level 2 or 3 allow 50 MB or 100 MB, but only inside that server.
- Why does Discord say my file is too large when it was fine before?
- The free limit changed several times: 8 MB, then 25 MB, then 10 MB in late 2024, and 20 MB from August 2026. Discord now also checks the size before compressing on mobile.
- How long a video can fit in 20 MB?
- About 2 to 3 minutes at 720p looks good. Longer videos still fit, but lowering the resolution in Advanced keeps them sharper than squeezing the bitrate.
- Will Discord compress it again?
- Discord may re-encode for previews, but a file under the limit uploads as is and keeps its quality for download.
