  • What flattening does

Form fields, check boxes, comments, highlights, and stamps sit on top of a PDF's pages as separate objects that anyone can change. Flattening draws each one into the page exactly as it looks, then removes the editable layer.

  • When to flatten

Flatten a filled in form before you send it, so the answers can't be changed by accident and look the same in every reader. It also helps when a form's answers show up blank in some apps or when printing.

  • What stays the same

Page text stays sharp and selectable, links stay clickable, and the layout doesn't move. Hidden comments and popup notes, which never show on the page, are removed.

Questions

Can I flatten only the form and keep comments?

Yes. Choose Form fields only. Every form field is drawn into the page, and comments and markup stay editable.

Can I undo flattening?

No. The fields become part of the page. Keep the original if you might need to change an answer.

Is flattening the same as redacting?

No. Flattening keeps everything visible and only stops editing. To remove private details for real, use Redact PDF.

What about digital signatures?

Changing a digitally signed PDF in any way breaks its signature, and flattening is a change. Flatten before signing, not after.
